On building things that outlast the demo

Notes toward work that survives contact with reality.

A demo is a promise made under perfect conditions. The interesting work starts the moment those conditions go away — when real people, real data, and real time get involved.

This first episode is about the distance between the thing that wows a room and the thing that’s still standing a year later. Most of what makes a demo great is exactly what makes it fragile. The trick is learning to tell the two apart before you ship.
